Avoid Sugars and quick digested Starches Part 5

Food or drink with lots of sugar or starches that are easily turned into blood sugar (glucose) causes your pancreas to put out too much insulin. Insulin “opens the gates” of all cells to accept glucose. This includes muscle cells, fat cells and brain cells. You get a “sugar high” as the brain makes endorphins because of high glucose. But later, when blood glucose gets too low, you feel light-headed, tired or nervous and crave more sugar. Eventually your body’s cells get resistant to the action of insulin so more and more is made, exhausting the pancreas, leading to type II diabetes. This had been called “adult onset” but is occurring in children. Like adults they first get obese as sugar enters fat cells then they get diabetes. Dr. Schwarzbein, who used to be a sugar “junkie” herself, tells how to decrease cravings. Julia Ross, who used to run a clinic for drug addicts, tells how specific amino acids can cure your abnormal cravings for sweets.

If possible, increase your use of natural foods, including plenty of vegetables. If you must buy manufactured foods or beverages, read the labels. (I found only one brand of applesauce without added high-fructose corn syrup.) Labels don’t list omega-6 fatty acids in oils. Some canned fish lists the healthier omega-3 fatty acids.
